But AI can also become another source of relentless noise. New models, features, benchmarks, warnings and “game-changing” workflows arrive faster than any entrepreneur can absorb them.

It is one of the wider rules I developed for surviving and thriving in the AI era, because information only becomes an advantage when you can still focus long enough to use it.
The easiest analogy comes from two places in New York.
Times Square is built to capture attention. Screens flash. Headlines move. Every surface competes to make you look again. The Rose Main Reading Room at the New York Public Library does something different. It creates the conditions for sustained focus.
AI can turn your working day into either environment.
If you spend the morning chasing prompts, releases and opinions, you may feel informed while becoming less able to pursue one difficult objective. If you give AI a defined role inside a stable project, it can help create your own Rose Main Reading Room: fewer loose ends, more useful context and longer periods of concentrated work.
That same distinction matters when you are using AI to make your mornings more productive: the tool should remove routine friction without turning the start of every day into another dashboard to monitor.
Decision rule: Use AI to reduce the information required for a decision. Do not let it multiply the number of decisions demanding your attention.
For example, instead of asking, “What happened in AI today?” ask:
Which developments in the past seven days directly affect my customers?
What changed that requires action within 30 days?
What can I safely ignore?
Cite the original announcement for every recommendation.

2. AI Changes Where Critical Thinking Happens

You have probably heard the dramatic version: AI is making people stupid. The research does not justify that sweeping conclusion.
A 2025 Microsoft Research and Carnegie Mellon study surveyed 319 knowledge workers and collected 936 examples of AI-assisted work. Higher confidence in AI was associated with less reported critical-thinking effort, while higher confidence in one's own ability was associated with more.
This was a self-reported survey, so it does not prove that AI permanently reduces intelligence. Its more useful finding is that AI moves critical thinking. Instead of creating everything from scratch, people spend more effort verifying information, integrating responses and supervising the task.
Think of AI as an escalator beside a staircase. The escalator gets you to the next floor faster. That does not damage your legs. But if it becomes the only way you ever move, the muscles you no longer exercise will not stay equally strong.
The business risk appears when AI supplies all three of these:
the first interpretation of the problem;
the options you are allowed to consider; and
the final verdict.
Your judgment has no meaningful role left.
My rule is simple: if AI gives you the first thought and the final verdict, your judgment gets no exercise.
Keep at least one high-value thinking stage human:
Write your diagnosis before asking AI for one.
Predict what the data will show before running the analysis.
List your decision criteria before requesting recommendations.
Ask AI to find weaknesses in your position rather than confirm it.
Explain the final choice in your own words before acting.

3. Faster Work Can Feel Less Meaningful

Efficiency has a psychological side effect that rarely appears in a productivity demo: when the struggle disappears, the sense of achievement can disappear with it.
A 2025 Scientific Reports study ran four online experiments with 3,562 participants. Working with generative AI improved immediate performance, but the performance benefit did not continue when participants later worked alone. The transition back to solo work was also accompanied by lower intrinsic motivation and more boredom.
An even more direct 2026 Scientific Reports study compared three approaches to work:

Across a preregistered experiment with 269 people and a follow-up survey of 270 working adults, passive copy-and-paste use reduced reported independent confidence, psychological ownership and meaningfulness. People who started with their own draft and used AI collaboratively produced a psychological experience closer to people who worked without AI.
That distinction matters more than any debate about whether using AI is “cheating.”
Imagine assembling flat-pack furniture. Pressing a button that delivers a finished table is efficient. Building it with a power tool still saves time, but you understand the structure, can repair it and feel that your hands were involved. One gives you an object. The other leaves you with an object and some capability.
The practical lesson is not that you should manually write every sentence. Reserve human-first work for the areas that create strategic or personal value:
the diagnosis behind your offer;
the opinion that separates you from competitors;
the story only you can tell;
the final commercial judgment;
the promise you are willing to put your reputation behind.
Then use AI to research, stress-test, organize, edit and expand.
4. AI Can Improve Confidence, Performance and Positive Emotion

In a field experiment involving hundreds of professionals at Procter & Gamble, researchers found that individuals working with AI could reach performance levels comparable to conventional two-person teams. The Harvard Business School account of the study also reports that AI users experienced more positive emotions and fewer negative ones.
That makes intuitive sense. A blank page can feel threatening. A responsive collaborator can reduce the friction of beginning, expose a person to expertise outside their normal field and make a complex assignment feel manageable.
For a solopreneur, AI can serve as:
a rehearsal partner before a sales call;
a critic who finds gaps in a launch plan;
a translator between financial, technical and marketing language;
a brainstorming partner when no team is available;
a patient tutor that adapts an explanation until it clicks.

6. AI Anxiety Is Often an Identity Problem Disguised as a Tool Problem

Entrepreneurs often say they are anxious because they cannot keep up with the tools. Underneath that pressure is a more personal question:
If AI can produce what I produce, where does my value come from now?
That is not a software problem. It is an identity problem.
Work provides more than income. It can supply competence, status, purpose and a story about who we are. When AI begins performing a task that took years to master, the threat can feel like erasure—even if the person's wider value has not disappeared.

Task: What do you physically produce?
Expertise: What patterns can you recognize that a beginner misses?
Judgment: Which trade-offs are you trusted to make?
Point of view: What do you believe that shapes the way you solve the problem?
AI will continue pushing down the price of generic production. Your experience, taste, relationships, courage and accountability become more commercially important, not less.
That does not remove the need to adapt. It gives adaptation a direction.
7. AI Can Offer Connection Without Replacing Human Connection

AI can be comforting. It is available at 2 a.m., does not appear impatient and can help a person put confused feelings into words. Used as a rehearsal space, journal or bridge to real support, that may be genuinely useful.
The concern begins when a bridge becomes a destination.
In 2025, OpenAI and MIT Media Lab published early research into ChatGPT use and emotional well-being. It combined large-scale platform analysis with a four-week randomized controlled study involving nearly 1,000 people. Emotional use was uncommon overall and concentrated among a small group of heavy users. Extended daily use was associated with worse outcomes, while voice use showed mixed effects depending on duration and the individual.
The authors explicitly warn against overgeneralizing the findings. The work had not yet been peer reviewed, some results were correlational and it focused on English-speaking U.S. participants using ChatGPT.
That caution is essential. We cannot turn early evidence into a universal time limit or diagnose someone from their chat history.
We can use a practical boundary:
Healthy bridge: AI helps you prepare to speak with a customer, partner, friend, coach, doctor or therapist.
Warning sign: AI increasingly replaces those conversations, and you feel distressed, secretive or unable to function when it is unavailable.

Green: AI increases capability while you retain judgment, ownership and connection.
Yellow: AI saves time, but you could not explain the result or repeat the task without it.
Red: AI routinely replaces judgment, meaningful effort or human support—and its absence causes distress.
Choose one yellow activity and redesign it this week. Small corrections are more sustainable than a dramatic “AI detox” that ignores how modern work actually operates.

How to Use AI Without Outsourcing Yourself

The research suggests a practical philosophy: automate the friction, not the faculties that make you valuable.
Here are seven safeguards:
Think before you prompt. Write a short diagnosis, prediction or opinion first. Give the AI something human to work with.
Ask for challenge, not applause. Request counterarguments, missing evidence and failure scenarios.
Keep signature work human-first. Start the strategy, story, promise or judgment yourself, then use AI to strengthen it.
Maintain an unaided practice. Regularly write, calculate, present or solve a problem without AI so you know which skills remain available.
Create an AI news window. Check developments at a defined time instead of living inside an endless update cycle.
Return outputs to reality. Test ideas with customers, colleagues and real-world results. Fluency is not proof.
Protect human escalation routes. Decide in advance which financial, legal, medical and emotional issues require a qualified person.
The point is not to make AI use difficult. It is to ensure the person using it continues to become more capable.
